Several big brand manufacturers of sunscreen products are using spray packaging in succession. Schering-plough, one of the pioneers in spray-on packaging in the market, last year added children’s sunscreens, sunscreens for dry skin and new SPF sports products. In May, Playtex’s Banana Boat brand also launched a spray formula for kids and teens.
According to Eric Desmaris, marketing manager at Rexam, spray-on products allow users to evenly apply sunscreen to hard-to-reach areas or smoothly apply sunscreen to playful babies. Through its collaboration with the Group Plastohm, Rexam’s weighing systems division unveiled its “AirFree System, “featuring 360-degree spray-painted displays that help consumers apply them anywhere.
Another area where sprayers are most mature is perfume products, which also provide a good reference opportunity for other personal care products to apply spray packaging. Unilever’s Axe brand, for example, is targeted at male consumers, but its spray-on personal skincare products are also popular with teenagers and even women. Procter & Gamble (P&G) has also expanded its line of skin care products with a spray, most recently called Apple Dazzle. However, not every consumer will accept every personal care spray, such as deodorant, vertical and ball bearings, which are still widely accepted.
Tom’s of Maine USES environmentally friendly, recyclable ball bearings and sprinkler heads, but says the biggest challenge with vertical packaging is that it can melt if it gets too hot. But the company stuck with recyclable materials, opting for polypropylene recyclable plastics after experimenting with a wide range of resins.
In partnership with Brazilian firm Natura and Rexam, they have developed a reusable packaging material designed specifically for Natura’s men’s fragrance. Since then, the product can be easily refilled with a screw valve at the bottom of the bottle, reducing waste.
